How to collect Avios via the Avios Shopping portal

The Avios Shopping Portal: The Most Overlooked Way to Earn Extra Avios

The Avios Shopping portal – previously known as the Avios eStore – is arguably one of the most overlooked ways to earn Avios in the UK. The portal features more than 400 online retailers, rewarding you with Avios simply for clicking through to a retailer before making a purchase. It is operated by IAG Loyalty, part of International Airlines Group (IAG) – the same parent company behind British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling. British Airways Club is simply its largest redemption partner.

You'll find many of the UK's biggest retailers on the portal, but it's not just for shopping. You can also earn Avios when purchasing products such as car, pet and caravan insurance, whether through insurers directly or comparison websites. The list is surprisingly extensive.

Best of all, these Avios are in addition to any rewards you earn from paying with your credit card.

How it works

Using the portal couldn't be much simpler:

1) Log in to your British Airways Club account via avios.com.
2) Search for the retailer you want to shop with or browse the available offers.
3) Click the retailer's "Shop Now" button.
4) Complete your purchase as you normally would.

When you click through to a retailer, you'll usually be prompted to accept the Avios Shopping portal's tracking cookies. This is important, as the tracking cookie allows your purchase to be attributed to your account. If you decline the cookies, your purchase may not track and you could miss out on the Avios.

A few things to remember

To ensure your purchase tracks correctly:

1) Complete your purchase in one session. Avoid adding items to your basket, leaving the site and returning later.
2) Avoid using coupon or discount codes that are not listed on the Avios Shopping portal, as these can invalidate your reward.
3) If possible, disable ad blockers before clicking through, as they can interfere with the tracking process.

Once your purchase has tracked successfully, your Avios will usually post automatically. Most retailers credit within 30–45 days, while selected Speedy Awards retailers can credit within 24 hours. Hotel bookings generally take 90–120 days after your stay before the Avios are awarded.

What can you earn?

Earning rates vary significantly depending on the retailer. Lower-margin retailers may offer around 1 Avios per £1, while others regularly pay 10–15 Avios per £1 during promotions.

Typical rates at the time of writing include:

John Lewis – around 1 Avios per £1
Marks & Spencer – 1–2 Avios per £1
HelloFresh – 1 Avios per £1, plus a 900 Avios welcome bonus for new customers
Booking.com – around 3 Avios per £1
Uber Eats – currently 3 Avios per £1 (rates vary)
Apple – variable rates, with newly launched products usually excluded

Promotional offers appear regularly, with retailers increasing their earning rates for limited periods. It's worth checking the portal before making any sizeable online purchase, even if you weren't specifically looking to earn Avios.

The maths

Imagine you're spending £500 at a retailer offering 3 Avios per £1 - you would earn 1,500 Avios from the shopping portal.

Using a conservative Avios valuation of 1.0–1.2p each, those points are worth approximately £15–£18.

That equates to an effective rebate of around 3–3.6% for a purchase you were already planning to make.

It may not seem life-changing on a single transaction, but it adds up surprisingly quickly.

Spend £5,000 across the year through the portal at an average rate of 3 Avios per £1, and you'll collect 15,000 Avios—worth roughly £150–£180.

Stack your rewards with an Avios credit card

One of the biggest advantages of the portal is that the rewards stack with those earned from your payment card.

For example, if you spend £100 at a retailer paying 3 Avios per £1, and pay using a British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card (earning 1.5 Avios per £1 on everyday spending), you'll receive:

-300 Avios from the shopping portal
-150 Avios from your credit card
-450 Avios in total

Based on typical Avios valuations, that's an effective return of around 4.5–5.4%, comfortably outperforming most cashback credit cards.

Delivery charges, taxes, VAT and certain excluded product categories are typically not eligible, so always check the retailer's terms before purchasing.

Final thoughts

The Avios Shopping portal won't replace the biggest Avios earners, such as generous credit card sign-up bonuses or spending enough on a British Airways American Express card to earn a Companion Voucher.

However, for spending you were going to make anyway, it is one of the easiest ways to collect free Avios with virtually no additional effort.

The best approach is simple: bookmark avios.com. Whenever you're about to make an online purchase—particularly anything over £50—check whether the retailer appears on the portal. If it does, click through first. If not, carry on as normal.

It takes less than a minute and, over the course of a year, those extra Avios can easily add up to enough for reward flights, cabin upgrades or hotel stays.

If your Avios haven't appeared after the expected timeframe, you can submit a claim using the "Missing Avios" form on the Avios website, provided you've kept your order confirmation and met the retailer's qualifying terms.
